Description:
Maori Pah gully or trench. A long, broad linear depression/gully with a flattish floor and steep, sloping sides. It is overgrown with grass in the depression and the sides are embanked and covered with thick vegetation. This large gully/trench leads up to the No.1 Outpost front line on the ridge above. Surrounding this feature, are many dugouts and many other artefacts (F979, F980) especially on the south-eastern side. This zone appears to have been an ANZAC back-of-line living area, possibly for the NZ Maori unit. There is a section of this trench at the western end that used as a modern rubbish dump. This was not documented as it was considered too disturbed by modern works.
