Description:
Trench. A linear depression that curves around the SW side of the ridge. It has sloping sides and the base is covered with thick leaf litter. Medium depth. Generally the trench is well defined with a wide, flat floor. There is a strategic position at a bend in the trench that is 185 x 125cm. It looks out W to the sea (position F971). The trench curves around to the NW and becomes wider with a flatter floor and thickly overgrown with holly. The character of the trench varies to the SE where is continues in a zig-zag fashion. It has small hollowed-out postions at the corners. The soils become more pebbly and gravelly. The trench curves around and is well preserved near a bend at the south end of the ridge (overlooking The Nek) there is a tumble of field stones on side that may have been used to fortify a firing position. The trench curves back on itself in a big loop at the SE end. There are junctions to F972 and F974. Two sections of this trench were recorded, 11.06m long and 125.2m long.
